Project Summary

Abstract:

Hepatic fibrosis is a reversible scarring response to liver injury and ultimately, leads to cirrhosis. The aim of this project is the development of a new complex product formulation based on chrysin/cyclodextrin complex and the gemmoterapic root extract of Secale cereale, designed to reverse efficiently liver fibrosis. The specific objectives are the development of a new gemmotherapy-based Secale cereale reinforced with chrysin/cyclodextrin nanocomplexes (SC-CHR/Cyclo) and the validation of the antifibrotic effects of gemmotherapy-based Secale cereale reinforced with chrysin/cyclodextrin nanocomplexes in a liver fibrosis rodent model. This is the first study to analyse the biological activity of Secale cereale root gemmotherapic extract, in particular for liver pathology. Based on our previous expertise, we aimed to prepare the nanocomplex formulation of chrysin in cyclodextrins (in order to increase their solubility and bioavailability), which will be further processed with the Secale cereale gemmotherapic extract to obtain a formulation suitable for oral administration.
